What is Photography?

Photography is one of those things where there is truly no set definition. The meaning of photography to me may not be photography to you and there is nothing wrong with that. The idea of photography is more than just capturing images. Everyone has a different reason on why they capture photos and what that process meant to them.

Photography to me is a form of expression. You can often read into someone's mindset and current emotions simply by the photos they capture. I capture many photos on my phone that often show different moods without saying a word. I may have pictures of a beautiful landscape in nature that represents the peace I felt at that time. Alternatively, I may capture a photo in the middle of a function that just shows a fun, joyous time.

The famous Marvin Heiferman states, "Photographs don't only show us things, they do things.". To me this shows that photos can also tell stories. Often times people capture moments in hope to relive them when they revisit them in the future. One may capture a landscape on vacation hoping to one day feel that same joy they felt when they actually captured the photo. A couple may take a picture on their date night and with no words involved, the photo will tell them the story of what happened on that beautiful night.
