The Great Man Ray

       Emmanuel Radnitzky, better known as, Man Ray, was a world famous artist. Man Ray was a photographer, filmmaker, and a painter. Man Ray was an American artist who relocated to  Paris in 1921. Whilst in Paris, Man Ray made a career out of producing portraits of his colleagues. Additionally, he was a fashion photographer for companies such as Vogue. Although Man Ray had a lucrative career in fashion photography and creating these portraits, Man Ray is mostly remembered for his photographic innovation, the photogram.      At the time, these images were known as "Rayographs". Man Ray mistakenly discovered this form of photography. While in the darkroom, he placed various objects and manipulated them in the way he so desired on photosensitive paper and exposed it to controlled light for periods of time. Although the Rayographs were aesthetically pleasing, in my personal opinion they lack meaning or story. I enjoy them wrong the look but...

What is Photography?

Photography is one of those things where there is truly no set definition. The meaning of photography to me may not be photography to you and there is nothing wrong with that. The idea of photography is more than just capturing images. Everyone has a different reason on why they capture photos and what that process meant to them. Photography to me is a form of expression. You can often read into someone's mindset and current emotions simply by the photos they capture. I capture many photos on my phone that often show different moods without saying a word. I may have pictures of a beautiful landscape in nature that represents the peace I felt at that time. Alternatively, I may capture a photo in the middle of a function that just shows a fun, joyous time.  The famous Marvin Heiferman states, "Photographs don't only show us things, they do things.".
